The history of the Thai monarchy dates back to 1238 when King Ram Khamhaeng ascended the throne. He established the first unified Thai kingdom, Sukhothai, and was an influential and innovative ruler who promoted a greater sense of national identity.
In the 14th century, Thailand was briefly invaded by a Burmese kingdom, causing the fledgling nation to fracture into a number of small principalities. This chaos ended in 1782 when Rama I (1767 - 1809) established the present Chakri dynasty and unified the country.
Since then, nine monarchs have reigned over Thailand. Under their rule, Thailand has experienced rapid modernization and is now one of the most developed nations in Southeast Asia.
Thailand's current royal family consists of the reigning monarch, King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X), and his wife, Queen Suthida. He assumed the throne in 2016, upon the death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). The royal family is highly respected and plays an important ceremonial role in the government of the country.
