It has been classified as a monument historique since 1936 and has been in private possession since the seventeenth century. Its core dates from 12th century and was rebuilt in 1600, and its ramparts are the work of the 16th century military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The castle was built to protect the border of the Heve district against the neighbouring countries. It was built up in 1184 by the first Lord of Bricquebec, Jean de Bricquebec, and it was taken by the English in 1204.The castle was owned by Jean de Bricquebec and his descendants up until 1609, when it was acquired by the barons des Monts. It continued to be owned by the barons des Monts, until 1651, when it was given as a wedding gift to Francois de Seignelay, who was the minister of navy to Louis XIV. It remained in the Seignelay family until the 1700s, when it was acquired by the Napoleons, a wealthy family from northern Normandy. The Napoleons owned the castle up until 1970.
