St. Thomas Anglican Church is located in Belleville, Ontario, and was constructed in 1847. It is a diminutive but fine example of the Gothic Revival style of the Church of England. The building was constructed using a combination of limestone and buff brick in a pointed-arch style. The history of St. Thomas dates back to 1825, when the Reverend Robert Beardsley was sent to oversee Anglican ministry in what was then known as Waterloo Township (which eventually split into the two townships of Thurlow and Sidney, in which nearly all of Belleville is now located). It is believed that, around the middle of 1825, Beardsley and his congregation had begun to meet in the home of Alice Tackaberry, near the present site of St. Thomas. By 1833, Beardsley had been replaced by the Reverend Magnus Lane, and the need for a church was becoming more evident. So with the help of local donations, in 1834, a frame structure was constructed on the site of the present building. This original structure served the congregation for thirteen years, until a larger stone building replaced it in 1847. The stone church was designed by David E. Ramsay with assistance from the architect Henry G. Muller. The building’s foundation is made of limestone and the building is constructed from buff brick, with limestone trim around the windows, doors and foundations. Inside, the church is fitted with pine floors and cedar panelling. The pews were handcrafted locally from native hardwoods by the Rhody and Seneca Cook families. In 1892, a stained glass window, depicting St. John the Evangelist, was installed in the chancel of the church. In 1907, this window was removed and given to the Anglican parish at Prince Edward Point, where it is still used today. Throughout the 20th century, restoration was undertaken as needed. In 1983, the organ was rebuilt and restored, and the masonry was cleaned and repaired in 1999. The building is currently owned by the Township of Thurlow.
