He received a public school education and subsequently trained in medicine in Halifax and Montreal.Macphail was a renowned doctor and a prolific writer who produced a wide variety of works from memoirs to technical treatises. Macphail worked as a doctor for the Canadian Army along with his brother, Dr. Alexander, in both World Wars. He was awarded the Order of Merit from Britain for his dedication to medicine and received the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Rutherford Memorial Medal in 1940.
