Longwood Manor is a large and iconic landmark of historic Nanaimo. Located on the corner of Townsite Road and Superior Street, Longwood Manor is a beautiful and imposing Tudor Revival mansion that was built between 1912 and 1914 by local architect Edmund Blackmore. The manor was built for Canadian Pacific Railway pioneer Thomas H. Skinner, who had moved to Nanaimo to manage the local coal industry in 1911.
Skinner and his family lived at Longwood Manor until 1927, when they sold the house. It was purchased and renovated by local businessman Donald Baird, who lived in the home until his death in 1973. Longwood Manor remained in the Baird family for the next forty years, and was purchased in 2013 by Island Savings Credit Union to be used as their corporate headquarters.
Longwood Manor is a designated heritage building under the Heritage Conservation Act of British Columbia. Since its construction, Longwood Manor has served numerous community organizations, including the YM/YWCA, the Nanaimo Forest Rangers Junior Hockey Club, and the Nanaimo Art Gallery.
