Duffus Castle is a partially ruined and partly restored medieval motte-and-bailey castle located near Duffus, between Elgin and Lossiemouth, Moray, Scotland. The castle was constructed in the 1150s by the Moray Firth’s first pre-Norman rulers. It overlooks the nearby Hill of Findlater (now Hill of Fearn). Duffus Castle is one of the best examples of an early-Norman motte-and-bailey castle still surviving in Scotland. The castle consists of a mound, large ditch and two courtyards.The castle was originally built by the major landowner of Moray, Freskyn de Moravia, a cousin of King William I of Scotland, and the land passed to his nephew William I. In 1270, William I's son, William the Hardy, extended the castle with a large stone tower. By 1296, the castle had passed to the Bruces. They held it until 1426 when it was taken by the Earl of Moray, and then by the Earl of Sutherland in 1434.In 1638, Duffus passed to the Gordons of Huntly, but the castle started to be abandoned and eventually fell into a state of disrepair. In 1715 the castle was set on fire during the Jacobite Rising. In 1887, the then Duke of Richmond began to restore the castle and it underwent further restoration in the 1950s by Historic Scotland.
