Weesenstein Castle is a Renaissance-style castle located in the Müglitztal Valley, Saxony, Germany. It is on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the river Müglitz and downstream from the town of Dippoldiswalde. It was originally built as a monastery of the Augustinians in the mid-14th century.In 1554, the building was converted into a Renaissance castle by Joachim II of Anhalt. The castle changed ownership a few times, finally ending up in the possession of the Saxon family of Flemming in 1705. In 1741, the “Weesensteiner system” was developed by the overseer Christian Reinhard Flemming, which was a complex system of canals and sluices that helped improve irrigation of the nearby farmlands.In 1757, the castle was devastated by a fire, destroying nearly one third of the building.
