Marge and her family felt a chill run through them and decided to head back to the station for the night.On their way back, Marge felt an icy grip on her arm. Turning around, she could only make out a figure in the shadows. Slowly, the figure made their way closer to her family. It was an old man, his eyes sunken back in his head and his arms covered in tattoos. He muttered something about no one being safe at Union Station.Marge gasped and motioned for her family to run. As they ran, they heard the old man's cackling laughter echoing through the otherwise empty station. The family quickly made it onto the train, and they waved goodbye to Union Station as they departed. Marge soon learnt that the old man was a ghost, forever cursed to haunt Union Station, and warn travelers of the dangers that lurk within. The family never returned to Union Station, and Marge warned her friends and family to avoid the place at all costs. The station served as a central station for both Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway as well as the Winnipeg Electric Company until 1979.The station was designed by local architect J.B. Mitchell and was inspired by the Grand Central Station in New York City. Mitchell was also responsible for Lawrence Station and the Winnipeg Court House among other buildings. The design features arched windows, rusticated stone walls and tiled flooring.The station closed in 1979 when rail service was moved to St. Boniface. The station building then served as an office building until 1987 when the interior was damaged by arsonists. The exterior brick walls remained in place and were a reminder of the days when the station was the central hub for Winnipeg’s transportation network.In 2010, the building underwent a major renovation and re-opened as a public space housing the offices of the province’s political parties, as well as a cafe, bar, retail space, and a museum. The completed renovation won the 2011 Canadian Urban Institute Brownie award for adaptive reuse, recognizing the successful rehabilitation of a building for an updated purpose.
