It is located on the North-East edge of Robson Bight, within the traditional territory of the Kwakwaka'wakw and is approximately 30 kilometers north-west of Port McNeill.The traditional name of this area is "Kalugwis", meaning "dance around the fire". The current name of Telegraph Cove originates from the late 1800s. In 1897, due to the vast areas of dense old-growth forest on the island, a telegraph line was built by Royal Navy personnel. The line ran from Brooks Peninsula to Alert Bay and included a waypoint at the current location of Telegraph Cove. In 1915, the first commercial fishing camp in the area was established by brothers Percival and Ernest Semple. The Semple brothers also built a cannery in 1920, giving steady employment to the area. It operated until 1948 when it was bought out by a larger company and has since been torn down.By the mid-1960s, the community had become a popular destination for weekend fishing, resulting in more people building summer cottages and businesses in the area.
