Manoir Richelieu is a resort hotel located in the picturesque town of La Malbaie, Quebec, near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. The Manoir originated in 1899, when François-Louis-Joseph Locas de Laflamme, an industrialist from Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, purchased a parcel of land on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River in the Charlevoix region of Quebec. With the help of respected Montreal architect Edward Maxwell, he built a luxurious estate and named it Manoir Richelieu, after the Prince de Richelieu, a French cardinal and one of the most influential European persons in the early eighteenth century.
The grand home was designed in the Beaux-Arts style, and included several ornately furnished rooms, fifteen bedrooms, and various decks and balconies. Immediately surrounding the estate were beautiful gardens and a formal French and English park complete with a greenhouse.
In 1941, the Manoir was taken over by the Canadian Department of Transport, to be used as a navigation school and observatory for the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1945, with the end of the war, the Manoir was returned to François-Louis-Joseph Locas de Laflamme, who donated it to the Knights of Columbus in Canada.
The Knights of Columbus then donated the Manoir to the federal government, who turned it into a national historic park, operated by Parks Canada. Today it is a national historic site and popular luxury resort open to tourists for year-round lodging. Aside from its accommodations, the Manoir Richelieu also offers lush gardens, a championship golf course and spa, an incredible view of the St. Lawrence River, and several restaurants and bars.
The Manoir Richelieu is continually being refurbished and invested in by the National and provincial government, as well as various private corporations. As a result, it represents an important part of the history and development of Quebec.
