Inveresk Lodge Garden is a historic garden located near Musselburgh, East Lothian, Scotland. It was created in the mid-19th century by the wealthy Barclay family who had lived at Inveresk Lodge since 1707. Inveresk Lodge itself was built in 1688 and has had multiple owners before it was designated as a Category A listed building in 1972. The gardens were laid out in the mid-19th century and included elaborate terraces, ornamental flower beds and herbaceous borders. One of the main features was a large, rectangular rock garden, which was believed to have been designed by the noted landscape architect, John Kennedy who worked at Inveresk between 1847 and 1868. Kennedy died in 1871 and much of his work was sadly lost during the early 20th century. In 1995, the garden was bought and saved from development by the Garden Conservation Trust, who began restoring the garden to its former glory. Today, Inveresk Lodge Garden is a popular tourist destination, boasting colourful displays of flowers and shrubs in summer, as well as stunning views across the Firth of Forth. The garden recalls the tradition of the grand estates of Scotland, with formal paths leading around the terraces. It contains many features of traditional Victorian garden design, such as a fountain, bold herbaceous borders and a long winding drive. The upper terrace overlooks the River Esk, while the lower terrace looks out over the Firth of Forth. The garden also features a large collection of rare and unusual trees and shrubs, including a redwood tree (Sequoiadendron giganteum), an Eucalyptus tree and an ancient Yew tree that was planted in the 18th century. Inveresk Lodge Garden is open to visitors daily from April to October and holds events and exhibitions throughout the year. It has been awarded several awards, including the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘Garden of the Year’ award in 1997 and was also listed in the Historic Scotland register in 2005.
