Dean Castle, near Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, Scotland, is a castle that has been in the hands of the Boyd family since the mid-15th century. It is now in the care of East Ayrshire Council with the resurrected and refurbished Country Park having been officially opened in April 2008. The Castle was built in the mid-14th century and is home to many artefacts and items of historical interest, with links to many of Scotland's greatest historical figures, including the Duke of Hamilton, Mary Queen of Scots and Robert the Bruce.The Castle was once the home of Sir Thomas Boyd who served as an arbiter in the disputes between Mary Queen of Scots and the rebellious Lords. In later years it was held by several generations of the Boyd family, including Sir Alexander Boyd who was the first Earl of Kilmarnock. The last member of the Boyd family to reside in the Castle was Major Robert Boyd who had to sell it in 1925.It then fell into a state of disrepair until 1965 when the then owner, Miss Isobel Boyd, gifted the Castle to the people of Kilmarnock in recognition of their loyalty to the Boyd family. The Castle is now a beautiful visitor attraction, surrounded by the 65 acre Dean Castle Country Park.
