Castle Levan is a 17th-century castle located in the village of Gaile, near Oban, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. The Castle is situated overlooking the Sound of Kerrera, at the entrance to Loch Crinan, and consists of a four-story L-plan tower house, built in 1661.The Castle was built by the MacLeans of Duart, in 1661, as a hunting lodge for Sir John MacLean, the 6th Chief of Clan MacLean, and is said to have been the most expensive castle of its time. Sir John MacLean was famous for his part in the Rescue of Charles II at the Battle of Worcester in 1651.In 1761, the Castle passed down to Sir Hector MacLean, Eighth of Duart, who remodelled the tower house and added a new wing in 1792. Sir Hector MacLean was known for his work alongside Robert Burns on the Kilmarnock Edition of Burns’ works.The castle remained in the family for over four centuries, until it was sold in 1960. The castle then passed through several hands, changing ownership several times, until 2017, when it was bought by a new owner who lovingly refurbished and restored the castle to its original splendour. Today, Castle Levan is a popular tourist destination in Scotland, and is a popular venue for weddings, events and other gatherings.
