History & Information of Castle Fraser
Castle Fraser is a 16th-century tower house located in the parish of Logie Coldstone, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, about 15 miles west of Aberdeen. Built by the Frasers of Muchalls in 1575, the castle is a category A listed building and is currently in the care of Historic Scotland. It is the largest Z-plan castle in Scotland, and was the seat of the Fraser family for many centuries.
The Fraser family arrived in Scotland from Anjou in the 12th century, and were granted land in the Mar Lachlan area of Aberdeenshire in 1202. The existing castle was built by Michael Fraser in 1575, although the previous tower house was likely built around 1450, by William Fraser of Philorth.
In 1680, the castle was purchased by Charles, Lord Fraser, who carried out considerable renovations and extensions between 1683 and 1690. This included building a new wing on the eastern side, adding floors, and extending the galleries and fortifications. The castle passed down through the Fraser male line until the early18th century, when Charles Fraser of Inverallochy succeeded to the title of Lord Fraser. In 1818, the castle was sold to Major James William Buckle who carried out extensive restoration work and added a Jacobean-style wing. The castle passed to Buckle’s son in 1835 and the family remained until 1911, when it was sold to Colonel Charles Foord.
In 1941, Castle Fraser was requisitioned by the Royal Navy and used to house Naval and Army personnel. After the War, it was bought by the estate of Major John Johnson and his wife, who continued to reside at the castle until 1988. In 1989, the castle was handed over to the care of Historic Scotland and remains open to the public as a popular tourist attraction.
