The Ruins of the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, commonly known as La Iglesia de Heredia, is located in the city of Heredia, Costa Rica, within the Central Valley region of the country. The ruins consist of two structures, the original stone church, built in 1710, and the adjacent bell tower, built in 1858.
The church was established in 1706 by the Jesuits as part of their mission in the area. It was the center of Catholic worship in Heredia for over 150 years and served as a political center as well, hosting meetings of the local primitive assembly as late as 1848.
The building was damaged by an earthquake in 1827, but was repaired by 1850. A bell was added to the structure in 1858, and a second bell was added in 1879. In 1887, the church was badly damaged by another earthquake and was abandoned.
Today, the ruins of the church are a popular tourist attraction and are managed by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports of Costa Rica. The ruins are open to the public and guided tours are provided. The original bell from the tower is on display in the town of Granadilla.
