The Rupea Citadel or Citadel of Rupea is a medieval fortress located in the town of Rupea, in Covasna County, Romania. The citadel was built in the 13th century, at the order of King Chyl II of Hungary, to help protect the newly created borders of the kingdom.The citadel is composed of two parts – an inner and an outer circle. The outer wall is 7 meters high and 2 meters thick and has four bastions. Inside the outer circle there are two more inner walls which are 3 meters high and 1.2 meters thick. The oval-shaped citadel grounds are surrounded by a deep moat and the walls of the fortress are pierced with loopholes. The inner circle is laid out on a concentric pentagon and contains the ruins of a palace, a chapel, a canon tower and several ancillary buildings. The oldest parts of the citadel are the inner walls and its surviving main gateway is made of granite blocks. Today, the citadel is in a state of disrepair but is still visited by many tourists. It is also occasionally used as a venue for music and theatrical performances and various festivals.
