She said the entire district was threatened by a mysterious and powerful evil force that had been slowly consuming the area. This was a force that none of the villagers had ever seen or heard of before, and none of the locals seemed to know what it was.
The family was terrified by the old woman's words, and so, they decided to take their chances and flee the district immediately. However, as they were leaving, they heard a loud and horrifying scream coming from deep within the jungle where they had been about to pass through.
The family soon learned from other villagers that there had been reports of disappearances in the area, and everyone staying in Iganga District was warned to remain indoors after dark and to avoid the jungle at all costs.
Days went by, but no one seemed to know what had happened to those who had disappeared. Soon, whispers began to spread that it was the work of a demon, coming out of the shadows of the jungle to take the souls of the living.
In a desperate attempt to save their family, the villagers of Iganga District held a meeting to devise a plan. As they did, an old shaman of the area stood up and spoke. He declared there was only one chance. He said a powerful magical ritual was needed to defeat this evil force.
The villagers were hesitant, but they agreed to the shamans plan. They performed the ritual and it seemed to work, for the disappearances ceased. The villagers breathed a sigh of relief. But deep down, there was still a lingering fear. Iganga district is a district in the Eastern Region of Uganda. It is the smallest district in the region by land area.
The town of Iganga, where the district headquarters are located, is approximately 148 kilometres (92 mi), by road, east of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. The geographic coordinates of Iganga, the town, are 0°37'59.0"N, 33°29'36.0"E (Latitude:0.633054; Longitude:33.493333).
The district is named after its chief municipal, administrative and commercial centre, Iganga Town. The district was created in July 2006 from the eastern part of Jinja District.
The population of the district was estimated at about 500,000 in 2012.
Iganga district is hilly such that most of the settlements are located in the valleys inbetween the hills. There is a rich diversity of soils hence making it suitable for crop production including food crops, coffee and tea.
