In 1272, the castle was destroyed by the League of God's House. It was rebuilt by the Haldenstein lineage under their leader Arnold IV von Haldenstein. In 1338, they sold the castle and associated lands to the city of Chur, who held it until 1300. During the 16th century, the castle was held by the Ludovic, Rheinberger and Schlattner families. It finally came under the ownership of the Hasen family in 1680 and it stayed in their possession until 1798 when it was sold to the Graubünden government. By 1818 the castle was almost completely abandoned until 1892 when it was purchased by the canton of Graubünden. Today the castle is a tourist attraction and has undergone extensive renovations.
