The castle is believed to have been built around 1490, as a residence for Jean Épineux, who was the Chancellor of the Bishop of Lausanne in the 15th century. The historian Jean-Louis Reynders believes that the castle was built somewhere between 1448 and 1490, based on a document from 1521 where the castle is documented as “Chaveyrou”. In the centuries that followed, the castle was owned by various families, which included the Bishop of Lausanne, the Grand Council of Lausanne, and the Étiquette Family.
Château de Chavornay was declared a national historic monument in 1991. It has a large, walled park, and the castle consists of a main building with several other buildings attached, which all compose a fine example of medieval fortifications. The castle also has a small chapel dedicated to Saint Pire.
In 1979, the owners of Château de Chavornay opened the castle to the public as a museum, where visitors can explore the various rooms in the castle and view the collection of antique furniture, weapons, and art. There is also a café, bookshop, and other facilities available on site, making it the perfect destination for a day out.
