The Bhawal Rajbari (Palace) of Gazipur district is a reflection of the battle and events associated with Bhawal Raj family. Bhawal estate was established by one Ramdulal Roy who was initially a Govinda Roy of Rajshahi Gopalpur Chandragarh of Chittagong. Ramdulal initially joined Medinipur independent army as a minor commander and later, by the patronage of Jagatram Roy, a Zamindar of Rajshahi Gopalpur he was selected as a subordinate of a British deputy collector. By the patronage of this British deputy collector he was able to acquire substantial areas in Bhawal parganah and established Bhawal Estate. Ramdulal who had three sons, Biprokrishna, Jogendramohan and Debendramohan, adopted the last two sons as his own.After the death of Ramdulal Roy in 1727, Jogendramohan was the leader of the Bhawal Estate and by his rule, the misappropriation by the Zamindars and Mals in the area decreased considerably. He was also an excellent politician in his own right and an ardent devotee of Lord Jagannath. This leader, Jogendramohan, established a Ganesh temple in his palace compound and held various festivals and fairs in that temple every year. His eldest son Pratapkrishna stepped up to expand the Bhawal Estate and he increased the area so substantially that the Bhawal Estate included areas in Pabna and Bogra districts and also in the current Jessore district.Rangalal Rai was the last zamindar of Bhawal Raja. He died in 1936 and left no successor. After a long litigation, the court appointed Jagat Mohan's widow Sree Bhumidevi Rai as the widow of Bhawal Raja and established her as the legal heir to the Bhawal Raja estate.The Bhawal Raja estate is now a popular tourist spot in Dhaka and Gazipur.
