History & Information of The Old Nicosia City Theater, Nicosia
The Old Nicosia City Theater, Nicosia first opened its doors in 1893, near Eleftheria Square. During its first phase of construction it could accommodate up to 1,200 spectators, with an orchestra in the center and two tiers of boxes on the sides. The theater was designed by renowned Italian architect Delfino Molfesi, and the interior decor was designed by Guglielmo Marconi, one of the most famous sculptors of the period.
The theater was used for several different performing arts including opera, dance, drama, and comedy, and was also the first venue to bring international artists such as Sarah Bernhardt, Enrico Caruso, Anna Pavlova and many others to Nicosia. In 1944, a major renovation was undertaken at the theater, which increased its seating capacity to over 2000 people and added a grand balcony. During the 1950s, it became one of the most popular entertainment venues in Nicosia and was a favourite of the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot communities.
Sadly, the theater was forced to close its doors in 2006 due to a lack of funding and resources, and has since fallen into disrepair. Efforts are however being made to save and renovate this historic theater by the Ministry of Education and Culture, The Nicosia Municipality and others.
