Muhammed BabaSultan Muhammed Baba (also known as Muhammed Baba Asha) was an influential 18th-century Islamic scholar from the Maldives. He was a celebrated religious leader and scholar, renowned for his works on Islamic teachings and Islamic law. He is also credited for introducing a modern-style of education in the Maldives, introducing Islamic textbooks, and enlightening the masses through his religious sermons. He was born near Nilandhoo, in central Male', and began his studies at the age of 13. He was especially interested in the works of Abdur Razzaq, the great 20th century Indian Islamic scholar from Iraq. Upon his return to the Maldives, he held several influential positions, including Chief Justice and speaker in the Maldivian parliament. He was a major proponent of the Felanfaanu dynasty, which he served as a spiritual advisor, and helped shape their rule in the Maldives. His religious works include Al A'was, a comprehensive commentary on the Quran, and a translation of the Hadiths. He also wrote many religious treatises, including a book on the workings of the Sharia law. He is remembered for his contributions to the Maldives, and to Islamic scholarship in general. He passed away in 1781 in Male'.
