Horror Story of Radim Castle
Radim Castle stands proud among the rolling hills of Bohemia, peeking down on the small villages below. It has sat undisturbed for centuries, a striking reminder of a forgotten past. Rumor has it the ancient castle still retains a lingering terror—one that has lived in the shadows since the 15th Century.
The locals call it the Curse of Radim, and whisper stories of horror between hushed voices. It is said that centuries ago, in 1423, the Duke of Radim ordered the execution of a local witch. Before she died, the witch cursed his beloved castle. Her spell would sentence the Duke, and all who lived in the castle, to a fate worse than death.
Soon after the Duke's death, a mysterious illness spread through the castle. Those living in the castle slowly dwindled away, succumbing to an eerie and unknown affliction. Some say it was a plague, others say it was the witch's curse. Whatever caused the illness, it was certain—there was no escape.
Since then, Radim Castle has stood empty—silently housing a terrifying secret. Those who have attempted to enter the castle have met a quick and grizzly end. No one has ever been known to survive a night inside its walls, many return muttering of an unspeakable horror that lurks in the shadows.
Until one day a brave explorer manages to lift the mysterious curse and uncover the true horror that Radim Castle hides; what secrets will he unearth during his quest for knowledge? Or will he simply become one more victim of the castle’s despair? The answer remains to be seen.
History & Information of Radim Castle
Radim Castle, also known as the Castle of Radim or Dun Radim, is a ruined castle in Czech Republic. The castle is situated in the hills south of Nymburk, in the Střední Mělník Natural Preserve, and is the highest castle ruin in the Czech Republic. Its location has long made it a popular tourist destination and its ruins an important historical attraction.
The castle was first mentioned in documents from 1318, but its exact construction date is unknown. Historic records suggest the original castle was made of wood. At the end of the 13th century, the castle was owned by the Counts of Radim, a powerful noble family in the region. During this period, the castle underwent several renovations and eventually came to be of sandstone masonry construction. During the Hussite Wars, in 1420, the castle was destroyed by the forces of Jan Žižka.
The castle was rebuilt around 1590 and underwent its greatest reconstruction in 1679 under the ownership of the Czernin family. To this day, the Czernin arms are proudly displayed on the castle ruins.
Radim Castle was burned and sacked by the Prussian army in 1742 during the War of the Austrian Succession, and was almost completely destroyed in 1773 when the troops of Jan Josef Czernin demolished the ruins.
Today, much of the castle remains in ruins, but there have been several efforts in recent years to preserve its history. In 2014, renovation work began that included the reconstruction of some of the castle’s walls and the rebuilding of the south wing. In 2018, the main entrance to the castle was also restored. Visitors can still explore the castle’s ruins and its breath-taking views of the surrounding landscape. The castle is open to the public year-round.
