Purtse Manor is an historic manor house located in the Purtse village of north-eastern Estonia. It is located on the shore of Purtse lake, a few kilometers northwest of the small coastal village of Porta. The manor, which dates back to at least 1501, has had several owners throughout its history.The first known owner of Purtse Manor was Johannes de Critz, who was appointed as master of the manor by Gustav Vasa, King of Sweden in 1501. Shortly afterwards, the manor was sold to the Butzbach heirs. The Butzbachs built a new manor house in 1679, which was later extended by the famous Baroque architect Russians. In 1805, Purtse Manor was purchased by Wilhelm von Schlippenbach, a Prussian officer. After von Schlippenbach's death a few years later, his son-in-law Otto von der Pahlen purchased the manor.Otto von der Pahlen built extensive additions to the manor in the early 19th century, including a new wing, a library and a chapel. He also built a number of other structures on the grounds, such as a neo-Gothic gate house and a lattice bridge.In 1851, Purtse Manor was purchased by Baron Adolf Hinrik von dem Bussche. He and his family owned it until 1948, when they were forced to flee Estonia in the wake of World War II. The manor was then taken over by the Soviet Union and used as a rest house for military officers.Purtse Manor was restored to the Bussche family in 1991 by the Estonian Government.
