Once upon a time in the small Czech village of Březnice, there lived a small but devout Catholic Church. The church is first recorded as a parish church in 1289 under the care of the Augustinian Canons from Sovinec Monastery. The original building was a wooden Romanesque church from the 12th century. The stone building from the 13th century was constructed on the original foundations with one nave and four octagonal pillars supporting an arched groin vault. The Gothic chapel of Saint Wenceslaus was added in the 15th century.The entrance to the church is through a cross altar and the main altar stands against the wall of the southern aisle. The Renaissance chorus added in the 17th century with a cupola contains the organ from 1576. Several valuable Renaissance paintings featuring the Virgin Mary and Child and scenes of the crucifixion and Resurrection are also located in the church. The Baroque facade was built in the 18th century and the town houses added in the 19th century. The interior of the church was renovated in 1984 and the tower was recently reconstructed.The church grounds are surrounded by a high wall. In the south-western side stands a cemetery chapel which was originally a small Gothic chapel and later altered to Baroque style. A statue of Saint Wenceslaus is located in front of the church.
