The Caledonian Hall in Kristiansand, Norway had been standing since 1883 when it was built. Sadly, however, the Hall was also the site of a horrific tragedy that still haunts the town to this day. When the Great War began, a large number of men answered the call to arms. The majority of them were young farm boys and fishermen from the area, and among them was Martin Bergman, a strapping young man of 21. Though excited to fight, he was also worried for his family’s safety, especially his young son who was only 5 years old at the time. Martin had promised that he would come back to Kristiansand safe and sound and visit his son in the Caledonian Hall on his return. But as the war dragged on and Martin’s letters grew fewer and farther between, the family began to fear the worst. It was only when Martin’s battered body was found on Kristiansand beach with a note in his pocket did the town finally learn of his fate. After a year and a half at the front lines, Martin had been one of the many unfortunate casualties of the war. But the tragedy did not end there. Upon his funeral at the Caledonian Hall, Martin’s son was inconsolable and had to be taken away from the ceremony early. Later that day, his parents were called to the local orphanage where their son had been found hanged in one of the rooms. Even though it was believed that the young boy had taken his own life due to the trauma of his father’s death, there was still an inescapable feeling of despair that lingered in the Hall and around the town for years to come. To this day, the Caledonian Hall in Kristiansand still stands and serves as a reminder of the tragedy that once occurred there.
