LTTC was initially known as The Government Teacher Training Centre. It was moved in 1947 from its original location in Zomba to its present location in Lilongwe (Area 25). This happened as a result of the transfer of the then colonial capital from Zomba to Lilongwe in 1947. The college was then converted into a full-fledged teachers training institution that was known as the Government Teacher Training College (GTTC).
Since its inception in 1945, LTTC has undergone a number of name changes and reforms. In 1956, the name GTTC was changed to Lilongwe Teachers Training College (LTTC). In 1973, it was changed to Malawi College of Education (MCE). Later, in 1980, it was again changed to Malawi National College of Education (MNCE). In 1992, the name was again changed to the Lilongwe Teachers Training College (LTTC).
