Horror Story of Casona de San Bernardo, Santiago
Chile
The Casona de San Bernardo, Santiago de Chile, was initially built centuries ago as a manor house for a prominent local noble family. In recent years, it has had a checkered history of changing hands, and more recently, was in the process of being renovated to become a bed and breakfast.
One fateful night, a storm rolled through Santiago de Chile. The occupants of the Casona de San Bernardo had gone to bed early, confident in the repairers’ promises that the building was sturdy and safe. Little did they know, however, that the storm had awakened something far more sinister than a loose roof tile.
Suddenly, the whole building began to shake and creak. Old portraits and knick-knacks that had been placed and forgotten began to tremble on their shelves. The strangest noise emanated from deep within the bowels of the house-- something like a low growl, but vastly louder.
As residents and guests alike started to stir, the sound grew quicker and louder. What started as a light beat of something banging against the walls of the house quickly turned into a full-fledged cacophony of unknown origin. No one knew exactly what the cause of the noise was, but all could feel the deep chill radiating from the eerie sound.
In the morning, the cause of the noise was determined-- an old family legend had come to life! In the days of Chile's warring factions, a rebel general had hidden a trove of gold and silver in the walls of the Casona de San Bernardo. According to the legend, the banging was the general's ghost, restlessly trying to alert any who might be listening to the whereabouts of his hidden fortune.
To this day, the Casona de San Bernardo remains an eerie reminder of its storied past. And on cold, windy nights, the ghost of the rebel general still stalks its hallways, hoping to one day reunite lost family treasures with their original owners.
