Horror Story of Casarão da Várzea - Recife
Once upon a time in the city of Recife, Brazil there lived a family of four in an old manor house known as the Casarão da Várzea.
The home had been passed down from generation to generation, and each family that lived there experienced a strange interior electricity. From sudden gusts of wind to gusts of overheated heat to unaccountable bouts of coldness, the Casarão da Várzea was rumored to be haunted.
One night, the youngest child in the family awaken in the middle of the night with an inexplicable feeling of terror. Peeking out from under the covers, the child calmly said to the empty periphery, “who’s there?”
Suddenly a voice said, “I am the Casarão da Várzea, and I am here to haunt you”.
The family soon discovered that the Casarão da Várzea was the home of a troubled spirit, one who was determined to haunt the family for all eternity. Every night, objects would move of their own volition, and at times the walls would seem to breathe and whimpers could be heard. No one was safe from its terror and the family feared they could never escape.
For years they managed to live (or rather, exist) within the manor, until one day the family discovered a hidden room in the basement containing writings and a portrait of a young woman. They learned that the spirit haunting their home was that of a young woman who had been wrongfully accused of witchcraft and perished in the house many years ago.
The family soon realized that the only way to lay the spirit of the young woman to rest would be to clear her name and make amends for her unjust death.
With the help of the local community the family managed to uncover the records of the witch trial and found evidence to vindicate her name. With heavy hearts they stood before the portrait and solemnly chanted the words of contrition for all she had lost.
At the same moment, the house suddenly stilled and the electricity was gone. The family took it as a sign that the spirit had finally been laid to rest.

During the eighteenth century, when Recife was the richest city in Brazil, the house passed through many hands until it became the property of Dona Maria de Jesus dos Reis, the daughter of a former slave, in 1850.

It was used for such until 1951, when it was donated to the Catholic Church by the owner at the time, Mr. Francisco de Lacerda. The building was then used as a school for teachers until 1988 when it was bought by a private citizen, Mr. Maurício Rebouças.
In 2005 Mr. Rebouças, along with other members of the local cultural associations, opened it to the public as a cultural center.
