Somerset Hospital is a private hospital located in the suburb of Green Point, in Cape Town, South Africa. It was established in 1908 when a group of Anglican clergy and businessmen founded the Somerset Home for Incurables, a nursing home for patients with incurable diseases. It was affiliated to the Anglican Church of the Province of South Africa.
Before World War II, the hospital focused on providing palliative care for patients with cancer. During the war, it was converted into a casualty hospital and, in preparation for its conversion back to a palliative care facility, an x-ray unit, operating theater, and pathology laboratory were added.
In the 1960s, the facility was modernised, and the wards were converted into single-bed rooms. A maternity ward with nursery, as well as a special TB ward, were constructed in 1965. In 1971, the hospital was re-named as the Somerset Hospital, and its focus shifted to comprehensive medical care.
Today, Somerset Hospital is a multi-disciplinary hospital with 130 beds, and provides a wide range of services including medical, surgical, obstetric, paediatric, neonatal, and psychiatric care, as well as medical imaging services.
