The Congregation of St. Basil was founded by Bishop Joseph Gillette in Paris, France in 1822. The congregation soon spread to Ireland in 1829 and Canada in 1842.Mary Lake Monastery was founded in 1923 as a farm and school for the religious education of young women. It was founded by Sister Mary Margaret Stoneman, of the Toronto congregation of the Congregation of St. Basil and Mother Margaret Mary McCann. The monastery and land was given to the Church in 1924 by Dr. and Mrs. R.G. McTaggart. The first building was completed in 1925 which included a chapel, barns, a boarding school and dormitory, and a convent.The monastery grew to include over 110 acres, with gardens and orchards, an animal farm, a pond and a retreat center.
