The museum is located on a hillside on Nordøystranda, a peninsula where the By (city) river flows into Trondheimsfjorden. The museum was established in 1895 by scholar and collector Peter Olhessen (1864–1944) and is Norway's oldest and largest open-air museum. The museum is named for King Sverre of Norway, who is credited with founding the city of Trondheim in the 12th century. The museum is divided into 10 districts, each describing a specific region or era of Trøndelag's history. The districts include the medieval Haltdalen stave church, an 18th-century town called Valøy, a natural history area, a mill, an old chapel, and a re-creation of a 19th-century coal-fired blast furnace. The museum also features over 30 art and crafts workshops, including a blacksmith's shop, a traditional timber-shingled boat building, and a traditional metallurgical workshop.
