History of Umaid Bhawan Palace:

Umaid Bhawan Palace was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh in 1928 and 1943, and presently his grandson is the owner of the palace. The foundation of Umaid Bhawan was first laid on November 18, 1929, by Maharaja Umaid Singh However, the construction work was completed in 1943, and the King could enjoy his creation only for four years and die in 1947.

After Maharaja Umaid Singh, his successor Hanwant Singh took over the empire and served for a few years before he died tragically at the young age of 28 in 1952 in a plane crash. In 1971, Gaj Singh II, who had succeeded his father, turned a portion of the palace into a hotel, and this part is now owned by the Taj Group of Hotels.

The hotel has 347 rooms, all of which are exquisite and rich in history. The Great Gatsby style is present in every nook and cranny of the palace! The entire area resembles a set from a world we have only read about in Indian history books, a world that was only known to the kings and queens of past glorious eras.

The remaining part of the palace is still owned by the royal family, and the present Maharaja still lives in the palace with his family. Golden and yellow-colored sandstone is used to build this palace that stands out among other buildings in the city. The interior woodwork of the palace is done using Burmese teak and Makrana marble, which further enhances its singular beauty. Please be careful not to get lost in the numerous courtyards here!
