By Train

The easiest route to get to Pisa is by train from Florence. Although Italy’s high-speed trains do not connect the two cities, you can travel on a “treno Regionale” (regional train). There are two types of regional train: the diretto (high-speed train), which makes only a small number of stops and arrives in 50 to 60 minutes, or the lunga percorrenza (long-distance), which stops locally and arrives in 1 hour, and 30 minutes ( it’s great if you don’t bother to spend even more time on board and look out the window at the picturesque landscape of the Tuscan countryside!). The latter is full of commuters, students and locals studying and working in Florence. Fares are the same: a one-way ticket between Florence and Pisa costs 8 euros. The first-class section of some trains, especially expresses trains, can cost € 13. Before boarding the train, you have to stamp your ticket and no reservation is required, so choose a free seat. Once you arrive in Pisa, stroll through Pisa’s historic center and arrive at Piazza dei Miracoli in around 20 minutes. Local buses and taxi services are also available.

By Bus

Although Pisa and Florence are very close, there is no public bus service between the two city centers. There is only one bus between Florence Villa Costanza and Pisa International Airport (€ 9.50 per person, 1 hour). Villa Costanza Tram Stop is on the west side of Florence and is easily reached from Santa Maria Novella Station via tram line 1 (20 minutes away, € 1.50 per person). It’s useful if you need to get to the airport, but if you want to go downtown, you have to travel on another public bus.

A more efficient solution is to use one of the many private buses available to offer faster journeys to Pisa city center, letting you in the monumental area and taking a frequent guided tour of Pisa at the Leaning Tower of Florence and the surrounding area.

By Car

By Car

Assuming no traffic, you can drive from Florence to Pisa in around an hour on the FI-PI-LI motorway (about 52 miles). However, as with any Italian historic city center, access to Pisa with its narrow streets and lack of parking spaces can be quite a challenge, not to mention the Restricted Traffic Area (ZTL), which should be avoided like a plague or otherwise fined. If you accidentally have a rental car and are planning to visit Pisa with it, we recommend that you use the free commuter car park next to Via Pietrasantina, with a EUR 1 shuttle to the city center. Free and paid parking spaces are available on site.
